Ukulele World Record - early signs say we've smashed it!
Friday 18 July 2014 - What a day, what a day!
Over fifty schools from Hampshire and beyond joined the Hampshire Music Education Hub within St Mary's football stadium to set a new Largest Ukulele Ensemble World Record!
We had a fantastic 2370 ukulele players through the turnstiles and a further 1200+ singers and supporters on the wonderfully sunny day in Southampton. Lots of smiley faces enjoyed two sets by Justin Fletcher MBE, with a ukulele warm-up session and the World Record Attempt in between. Pieces varied from 'You are my Sunshine', 'When the Saints go Marching in' to the 'Uke 'n' Sing' World Record song specially composed by Jan Stroud of Firesticks and Song.
The record set in Japan in 2012 at their Ukulele Picnic was 2134 and plans began in March of this year to beat that with Hampshire schools and the public! We will know soon whether we have unofficially broken the record once we have all the paperwork back in vouching for how many ukes were being played for the full five minutes. After which, the evidence will be sent to Guinness for the official nod after six weeks; the suspense will be difficult to bear!
2000 Mahalo ukuleles were bought in for the event and Mahalo provided sponsorship for the t-shirts you see in the photos to ensure everyone had a keepsake from the day. Mahalo to you all!
We hope we have inspired Hampshire to pick up an instrument, because you never know where it will take you...!
Huge thank yous go out to....
