Endangered Species Lessons have begun across the county...

Free instrument hire and lessons have been offered in a project that supports 'Endangered Species' instruments

ES BAYO 2016

Lessons have started in earnest this Autumn as a second year of the project sees new beginners come on board. Last year's cohort continues with free instrument hire as they are transitioned into an ensemble to develop their playing skills even further. Instruments have included double bass, cello, trombone, french horn, bassoon, tuba, euphonium, orchestral percussion and even bass guitar! Youth Ensemble pyramids are supporting these sessions to successfully increase specific instruments in their groups.

Pictured are those from the Basingstoke 'mini basses' for beginners. Tutor: "The group are making good progrress and after six lessons are now onto 4th finger and being able to play the open strings E and F# on the D string. We are starting the bow after Christmas!". The pupils are certainly enjoying themselves.

First / Early Access ensembles launching across the county...

Havant and Petersfield ensembles impress at music festivals...

Portsmouth Music Festival (7 & 13 February)

  • Havant clarinet and saxophone choir, conducted by Gemma Billington, received 93/100 (honours) and were awarded the Portsmouth City Junior Band Trophy.

  • Havant clarinet and saxophone choir 2, conducted by sue Riggs, received 92/100 (honours) and were awarded the Churchers Solicitor's Cup...They also won the Denegri Cup for most inspiring ensemble performance of the day!

  • Local news coverage: Petersfield Chamber Strings "The Petersfield Area Schools’ String Orchestra (PASSO) visited Crookhorn College in Waterlooville on Sunday to compete in the Portsmouth Music Festival. The Chamber Strings group (leader Kate Taylor, HTC) had been training hard for the event and presented a well rounded programme to an appreciative audience and adjudicator Christopher Hirons. It was a memorable occasion for the young string players who learnt much from the vastly experienced Hirons, who himself has appearedmany times as guest leader with chamber orchestras and symphony orchestras and was a member of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields for seven years appearing often as a soloist and director in most of the major festivals and concert halls worldwide.A great deal of his time has been devoted to chamber music, and PASSO were delighted to be awarded the YOUTH ORCHESTRA CUP by him, after his commenting in depth upon their excellent performance. He found their performance of Kuffner’s Polka “good and lively”, contrasting well with the “nice smooth playing” of Schubert’s famous LULLABY. The ensemble playing he found “mainly very good” and at the end congratulated the youth orchestra on their steadfast commitment to string playing before awarding them with a ‘HIGHLY COMMENDED’ certificate."

PASSO Chi Fest 2016

Chichester Festival of Music, Drama and Speech (5 March 2016)

  • Local News coverage: "Petersfield Area Schools' String Orchestra (PASSO) were awarded the top Grade, 'Outstanding', for their performance on Saturday in theChichester Festival by adjudicator Christopher King. He gave them a First in their section and presented [Kate Taylor, the leader of] the orchestra with the H.W.MOORE cup.PASSO gave a popular programme of music, including 'Fizzy PopSuite' by local composer Andrew Richardson and 'CelticMist' by Peter Martin, which drew strong admiration from the adjudicator. In his general summing up he referred to the strength of each section, particularly praising the ‘mighty’ 'cellos and the second violins and thenwrote of the commitment of this 'lovely orchestra' who had travelled to the festival by coach from TPS to present the programme."

Since then PASSO played in a third festival, the Petersfield Musical Festival 14 March, to a packed Petersfield Festival Hall!
