Create the Future

Create the Future project awarded Inspire mark

Hampshire County Council’s Music Service is proud to announce that its ‘Create the Future’ project has been granted the Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme. The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Create the Future is taking place in secondary schools over the course of the 2011-2012 academic year, with six composers working in fourteen schools across the whole county. Each composer will visit their schools at least four times and in many cases across eight days.

The project reflects two of the essential Olympic and Paralympic Values:

  • Inspiration: by working with composers who are recognised as experts in their field, we hope that many young people will be inspired to compose themselves. This has a strong parallel with the use of sporting legends to work with and inspire the next generation of athletes

  • Excellence: the introduction of experts into the classroom, with high expectations and capacity to develop high standards, will enable young people to engage with the creative process in a way that leads to outstanding outcomes

Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said, “We want to use the power of the Games to inspire change. The Inspire programme is recognising the work our partners all round the UK are doing to help us achieve this vision now – less than one year away from the start of the Games. I congratulate everyone involved in Create the Future for securing the Inspire mark and wish you every success with your work.”

The composers are working with different groups of pupils and teachers in each school. Everyone is exploring the creative process, however: the project is designed to explore how creative musical thinking can inspire new music that reflects a range of musical and non-musical ideas.

Although the focus is on the process of making new music, there will be performances within schools, at local venues and at major county events in the summer of 2012. Details as they emerge will be posted on the Hampshire Music Service web site, and on the project’s own pages at
