Open Mic success for HMS singers

Hampshire County Councils’ Music Service is proud to announce that MELO, one of its Award Ensembles, has won a place in the final of the Open Mic UK National Grand Final in The O2 in January, the biggest music competition in the UK for singers and solo artists.

Still only 17, the members of MELO are well on the way to success! They already boast a great local reputation with recent performances at The Kings Theatre’s Children in Need Gala, The News Guide Awards and the illumination of Portsmouth City Christmas lights. They can now add the prize of a place in the prestigious Open Mic UK 2011 National Grand Final at The O2 on 21 January 2012, as well as winners of the Judges’ Choice category in the recent South Area finals. An Open Mic UK spokesperson commented, The live music competition was fierce and the standard was extremely high, well done to all the singers for putting on a great show!”

MELO is a four-part harmony vocal group created by Hampshire Music Service specialist vocal coach Kim Seagrove. Molly Scott, Emily Stewart, Olivia Tambini and Kelly Childs have been singing together, in some form or other, for four years. They started out at school but were determined to carry on afterwards.

Their hard work and single-mindedness have now paid off and MELO has beaten thousands of other acts to make it through to the finals. The girls say, Getting to the finals of Open Mic UK was such a fantastic experience, it still hasn’t sunk in. The great thing about MELO is that we aren’t just a band, we are all really close friends and have so much fun performing together.” And it would be a fantastic opportunity for them to win the finals: there is over £50,000 in prizes up for grabs this year and the overall winner will be offered a recording contract, up to £30,000 investment, plus the opportunity to tour across the UK.

Their performance in the area final of ‘Timshel’ by Mumford and Sons and Kelly Clarkson’s current chart hit ‘Mr. Know it all’ is online
