Case Studies - KS3

These three case studies were generated as part of a 'Curriculum Development Initiative' investigation into the use of ICT in KS3 music by Hampshire schools. Following an initial meeting and discussion, each of the schools agreed the following:

To develop a KS3 unit of work which takes an existing unit of work, with a clear title/context and range of activities, and if necessary, 'tweak' it so that it:

  • Makes understanding of texture a key focus of learning

  • Makes development of how to compose with different rhythmic, melodic or harmonic 'layers' a key focus of learning

  • Identifies on any planning the contextual 'conventions' of the music being studied

  • Identifies clearly when and how ICT will be used to support the identified learning.

To teach this unit of work as normal, and to:

  • Record pupils' work

  • Identify between 3 and 6 examples of work reflecting the range of pupils' work produced

The work shared is therefore part of the normal routine of the department, adapted slightly in order that comparisons could be made between different approaches to the use of ICT in KS3 music.

While these case studies provide the classroom evidence of how ICT is used in these departments, the process of discussion and debate that led to their production helped to identify many of the issues raised in the Local advice from Hampshire teachers section.

Case Study A

This school has very limited ICT equipment - just a range of mixed keyboards. However, it endeavours to use their full potential as compositional tools, rather than simply using them as 'alternative xylophones / pianos'. The unit of work focused on the conventions of radio jingles. You can:

See the teacher's planning sheet

See the work sheet from one pair of Year 8 pupils

Case Study B

This school has a mix of computers with sample-based sounds, keyboards and other ICT equipment. The particular examples demonstrated here show how the computers (with some new sample sounds) were used by one group of pupils within a class using the full range of available equipment.

The unit of work focused on the conventions of film music. You can:

See the teacher's planning sheet

See the Lord of the Rings cue sheet that the Year 9 pupils worked from, including their music ideas for the work

Case Study C

This school has a KAAN installation, which includes a full set of identical keyboards with sequencers and disc drives to be controlled by the teacher (further details about this system can be viewed at http://www.cmtc.co.uk/kaan).

The unit of work focused on the conventions of Blues-Rock music. You can:

See the teacher's planning sheet

Listen to a completed composition from a pair of pupils within a mixed ability class who both have special needs
