Copying of Ordnance Survey Maps...

All Local Authority controlled schools (Open DofE Centres) are allowed access to Ordnance Survey maps under the PSMA (public sector mapping agreement). So, they would be allowed to receive, copy and use any Ordnance Survey maps we provide them with from our systems.

Other DofE Centres are not part of this agreement and so are not entitled to the same maps which are in the PSMA. Instead they can register for a service called digimap;

Ordnance Survey do have a number of products which are classed as 'open' which means any one can use this data. These tend to be more general/ small scale mapping so may not be suitable for close up field study work or showing a school site. (see

Our HCC IT department and my team are looking at ways to provide LA controlled schools with a digital map service and are investigating a number of solutions. If you have a need to regularly provide maps to schools would be great to talk/ discuss how you currently do so.

Other DofE Centres: it looks as if they have to sign up for the digimap service

Are academies aware that they have lost their rights re copying maps?

Have a look also at a new mapping service from the Countryside Access Team - excellent at the moment for displaying maps and will eventually have a print facility too.

Of course the eDofE Mapping is still live to use for eDofE users

Enrolment Forms

Please check and ensure all of the enrolment  forms forwarded to the HCC DofE office are completed in full. We have had a number of forms in the recent Autumn term 'boom' that we have had to follow up or add to our pending file. This causes delays for all those who have completed and forwarded their forms correctly.

Common issues:

  • Cheque(s) not made out to 'Hampshire County Council' (so we are unable to process them)

  • Award level not ticked (we often have to contact the participant directly)

  • Email address (they will not receive their automated login details email)

  • The participant is not of age (They will sit in the pending file, which is only checked monthly)

  • The participant has not completed a section from the previous award level to release the ability for us to add the next award level to their eDofE account (They will sit in the pending file, which is only checked monthly)

Galaxy Hot Chocolate Fund

Galaxy, a division of the Mars confectionary empire, is to launch a new scheme to support small, local, community-based voluntary organisations. Called the Galaxy Hot Chocolate Fund, each month from January to March 2013, small groups or individuals will be able to get one of 20 grants of up to £300.

Galaxy, part of the Mars confectionary group, has a grants programme based around its online site ‘Hot Galaxy Warm Heart’. It runs a series of short-duration campaigns aimed at supporting charities selected to some extent by site users.

Between October and December 2012 it has been supporting a Warm Heart Fund, with grants totalling £2000 a month being shared between six charities: Baby Lifeline, Children’s Heart Foundation, Fable, Little Hearts Matter, Rainbow Trust, and Rays of Sunshine. Each month, site users are encouraged to vote for their favourite, and the money is allocated accordingly. For the record, in October 2012 Little Hearts Matter got half the votes, with the Rainbow Trust coming second on 22%.

An earlier Warm Heart Fund running in 2011/12 saw £8000 being shared between Crisis and Together for Short Lives!

What’s next?

From January 2013, people will be able to nominate small, local, community-based organisations or individuals carrying out local community projects. In each of January, February and March 2013, 20 grants of £300 will be given to the most popular.

Further information and how to apply.

The Hot Chocolate Fund will launch on 7 January 2013, when nomination details will be published. Details will be available at
