The documents available on-line include two which form the employer regulation, guidance and advice, for three councils, Hampshire County Council, Southampton City Council and Portsmouth City Council and which present a very clear statement of requirements:

Off-site activities and educational visits: regulations and guidance

This document offers significant support to school, youth and voluntary groups in managing the process of off-site, educational, residential and adventurous activities. It advises on the need to properly assess and manage risk as well as identifying individual roles and responsibilities.

It focusses on:

  • Approval systems
  • Planning and managing visits, including those overseas
  • Supervision requirements in different outdoor contexts
  • Equal opportunities and inclusion strategies
  • Child protection requirements, including guidance on communicating with parents
  • First aid requirements
  • Transport, including minibus requirements
  • Accident, incident and emergency procedures to be followed.

Safety in adventurous activities

This document has been prepared to actively support and clarify your involvement in adventurous activity.

It offers:

  • A risk-benefit management system for outdoor and adventurous activities
  • Current guidance on recognised adventurous activities, e.g. climbing and sailing, as well as on newer activities such as kite flying and bushcraft
  • Advice about activities that have grown out of the outdoor approach to learning, e.g. problem-solving and team-building
  • A list of agreed activities - those with a personal development or education component - that will be covered by Council employer insurance and indemnity.
