Climbing
There is a series of opportunities for adults to enter the progression leading to the full rock climbing instructor’s qualification. They are:
- Introduction to climbing – artificial tower or wall, no previous experience required, no qualification obtained. However, essential for those wishing to attend the instructors award who have limited current experience.
- Artificial climbing walls and towers instructors award (belaying from the bottom) – training followed by a separate assessment – Hampshire County Council qualification only, but can be used in preparation for the MLTE single pitch award. The first step on the instructional ladder for applicants with some existing climbing experience.
- Single Pitch Award training course – applicants should already be experienced climbers with some leadership experience.
Improvers courses – for those who wish to gain further experience.
- Single Pitch Award assessment course – for those who have met the necessary log book requirements.
- Tidal environment endorsement day – essential for those wishing to supervise group on the Dorset sea cliffs. Applicants should be SPA holders or similar.
- Moving on – further experience courses (extension courses) –
- Improvised rescue for climbers
- Multi-pitch climbing
- Derbyshire, Peak Rock weekend plus many others.
Generic course content and objectives
- a progressive introduction to the skills, techniques and awareness required to become a competent climber and climbing leader, including rope work, belaying and climbing technique
- risk assessment and risk management issues and strategies for each particular situation
- an insight into climbing equipment and resources, from ropes through to belaying devices and personal equipment
- an introduction to opportunities for further development and support.
New Climbing Wall Award
This new climbing wall award will be the definitive award for those working on artificial cimbing structures throughout the country. It runs in a similar fashion to SPA and MI:
- registration (in addition to ML/WGL/SPA)
- training
- experience/consolidation
- assessment.
