Expeditioning: Basic expedition leader (BEL)
This course is a nationally recognised qualification from the British Sports Trust (CCPR) and one of our most popular courses.
Candidates need to have existing expertise and interest in working with young people.
Course content
- a progressive introduction to the knowledge, skills and understanding required for successful walking and expeditioning with young people in open country, including all aspects of:
- navigation and map work
- campcraft
- equipment and resources
- particular attention is placed on personal competence and leadership skills
- all activities are undertaken with an awareness of risk assessment and group management considerations
- an opportunity is provided to collect other certification:
- the Open country award
- the Heavyweight camping leader award
- the Lightweight camping leader award
- the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition trainers assessment
- opportunities are used to develop awareness of planning and managing the residential experience
- successful strategies are offered for working with young people in practical problem solving activities.

- the leadership and group management strategies required
- to promote an interest in further training and personal development focused on young people.

| Date | The course requires a minimum of 90 hours of instruction followed by 30 hours of group work with young people. The normal pattern is an integrated course of six evenings, two days and three residential weekends. The first meeting is on 18 January 2006. Exact details will be forwarded well in advance. |
| Venues | The evenings are in Winchester. Outdoor locations are used across the county, in the New Forest and Dorset. |
| Cost | HCC £210.00 Non HCC £260.00 plus £30.00 BEL registration cost, payable to Hampshire County Council by all applicants |
