Introduction/course objectives

A short course to inform staff about the use of GPS technology from an outdoor education perspective, enabling them to make informed decisions about the suitability of the technology for their needs.

Course content

• a GPS receiver:
• basic features: location, waypoints, routes, tracks
• costs
• uses in outdoor education
• practical field use issues
• adding a computer:
• laptop plus data cable
• free programs
• DIY maps scanning
• commercial programs (eg Memory Map)
• is it worth it?
• summary of options/costs
• knowing what is involved.
