Protect your home or business

No drainage system or flood alleviation measure can give absolute protection against all flooding events. It should be remembered that it is the responsibility of the owner to protect their own property. We will work with the district and borough councils to provide assistance during flooding incidents, but depending on the scale and locations of floods roads may be blocked and resources limited. These pages aim to give some basic advice about how to protect your home or business from flooding. For full information please refer to the Environment Agency’s website.
Flood preparation
Insurance before - It is most important to seek the best possible insurance cover for your home and contents - it is too late to consider this after a flood.
Be Prepared - Put your home emergency pack in a safe, accessible place. (See our leaflet Major Emergencies and You – how to prepare and what to expect PDF, for more information about preparing your emergency pack).
Know your home - Make sure you know how to turn off your electricity, gas and water.
Assess the Risk - Check whether your property is in a Flood Zone: Environment Agency Flood Maps and register for the Environment Agency flood warning service if it is available.
