The Gender Equality Duty
Public Bodies have an impact on the lives of most people and the Government expects them to take a leading role in improvingf equality for all people. The Equality Act 2006 places a duty to 'Promote Gender Equality' on the public sector. This is known as the Gender Equality Duty which has two parts:
The General duty places a legal duty on the County Council:
to eliminate unlawful discrimination and harrassment
to promote equality of opportunity between men and women
The specific duty is to produce a Gender Equality Scheme which describes how the council will meet the general duty by:
identifying gender equality goals and actions to meet them, in consultation with employees and other stakeholders
showing how it will monitor and review progress
Here is our draft Gender Equality Scheme. (this is an internal link only)We are publishing this for consultation. Please send any comments to equality.diversity@hants.gov.uk by 31st August 2007.
