Corporate Equality Plan and Race Equality Scheme

Summary and introduction | Vision | Contents

Summary and introduction

The Race Relations Amendment Act was introduced as a result of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry. The aim was to try to make sure that public organisations like the police and local authorities take a more positive approach to dealing with the public and delivering services.

Hampshire County Council, along with other public bodies, have a general duty to promote race equality. Under this duty we aim to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination

  • Promote equality of opportunity; and

  • Promote good relations between people of different racial groups

We also have a specific duty to produce a Race Equality Scheme which details how we are going to fulfil these duties.

We have combined the Scheme with our Corporate Equalities Plan.

These web pages outline our plans to improve access to Hampshire County Council's wide range of services, while recognising that some members of the community may face more barriers than others.

Vision

We aim to offer high quality accessible services to all the residents of Hampshire. In accordance with the stated aims and values of our Equalities Strategy, we are committed to securing genuine equality of opportunity, whether required by law or not, in all aspects of our activities as an employer and service provider.

For more details, visit our dedicated equalities website at www.hants.gov.uk/equalities.

All sections of the population should have equal access to jobs and services offered by the Council; no one will receive less favourable treatment than others because of, race, nationality, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, religion or belief.

This vision is based on a commitment to the broad principles of:

  • social justice

  • actively challenging unfair discrimination

  • encouraging participation

  • creating an environment in which equality of opportunity can operate.
