Change in spending

The County Council's budget is that part of its expenditure funded by general Government grant (20%) and council tax (80%).

Until 2006/07, the Government contributed to the funding of schools, as with other services, through general grant. However, since 1 April 2006 a Dedicated Schools Grant has been provided to cover the full cost of running Hampshire County Council Local Education Authority schools. General grant has been reduced. This funding change does not affect the services delivered, the level of investment, or the amount of council tax an individual pays.

In 2007/08 the County Council expects to spend £1,570 million on services compared with £1,489 million in 2006/07. After deducting specific grants, including the schools grant, and income from fees and charges, the County Council has set a budget of £598 million. This is an increase of 5.4% after adjusting for funding changes.
