Retail Prices Index and Consumer Price Index

Note - Since December 2003 the Government has used the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as its main measure of inflation in the economy rather than the Retail Prices Index (RPI)

On 13 January 1987 the General Index of Retail Prices reverted to the base of 100. All RPI figures have been converted to the 13 January 1987 base. Using the old base of 15 January 1974 the equivalent figure for 13 January 1987 is 394.5.
