Rock and Mineral collection
The rock and mineral collection contains numerous soft matrix and cemented blocks of stratigraphic and zonal significance. These specimens were collected from the marine and terrestrial deposits of the Quaternary, Paleogene and Cretaceous periods of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Common minerals found in Hampshire belong to the sulphide, oxide, carbonate and sulphate groups.
No figured material is present in the collection, however, certain individual matrix specimens provide new or previously unrecorded information on the sedimentation, palaeoecology, distribution and preservation of fossil species.
