Crab Wood
Crab Wood is a fine example of Ancient Woodland. It is a popular place to relax and view woodland wildlife. It is a Local Nature Reserve, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Over 80 hectares (200 acres) of broadleaved woodland, hazel coppice with oak/ash overstorey, and rich with woodland flowers.
How to find Crab Wood
It is 4km west of Winchester, along Sarum Road, the old Roman road to Salisbury Grid ref SU 433 293. From the Winchester/Romsey road (A3090/B3040) 1km from City centre, find Chilbolton Avenue (B3041). Turn west up Sarum Road, past private hospital and golf course. At cross-roads with large beech tree, drive straight on to the car park 100 m. Alternatively, travel through Sparsholt village from the Winchester/Stockbridge road (B3049, formerly the A272), once out of the narrow road through the woods, turn right at the cross-road, then 100m to car park. The nearest bus service is to Sparsholt village
Please observe the Country Code and remember that the whole area is working countryside, with forestry and agricultural operations, and people who live in the area. You should
- observe bridleway signs when riding.
- keep your dog under control (on a lead, or within view at all times and will come immediately to heel when called).
- stop your dog from fouling open areas and pathways where people walk and play.
- take your litter home
- avoid picking or uprooting wild flowers
- avoid parking in gateways
- observe signs warning of forestry operations
Crab Wood is part of Farley Mount Country Park, owned by Hampshire County Council Countryside Service. It is a 530 hectare (1300 acre) woodland and downland site, managed in conjuction with Forest Enterprise.
