Hampshire County Council
Mel Kendal has lived in the New Forest for more than 25 years. He is a private client investment consultant. He has been a Hampshire County Councillor since 1997 and the Executive Member for Environment and Transport at the County Council since September 2006. He is now Deputy Leader of the Council.
He is a trustee/board member of the Countryside Education Trust in Beaulieu and Ninth Centenary Trust which includes the New Forest Centre and Archive Library in Lyndhurst.
Mel is also a New Forest District Councillor (since 1995) and was formerly Leader of that Council for six years until November 2008, winning praise for leadership from the Audit Commission who described it as "Excellent". He is a past Chairman of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Government Association. He is Chairman of Transport for South Hampshire, Chairman of the Lymington to Brockenhurst Community Rail Partnership and a past Chairman of the Safer Roads Partnership for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
He was Vice Chairman of the Commission on Climate Change conducted by Hampshire County Council in 2008 and chairs the Centre of Excellence on Climate Change Panel at the County.
He has also been appointed a member of the European Commission's Civitas Political Advisory Group. He is a member of the Association of European Region’s Climate Change Committee where currently he is leading on the Committee’s attempt at standardisation of electric vehicle charging points throughout the European Union.
