Hampshire Police and Crime Panel

Recruitment of Co-opted Independent Member of Hampshire Police and Crime Panel

The Hampshire Police and Crime Panel is seeking a committed and energetic person from Hampshire or the Isle of Wight to serve as a co-opted independent member from July 2014 for a two year term. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the new arrangements for police governance and accountability.

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire is required to consult with the Panel on their plans for policing, as well as the level of council tax and the appointment of a Chief Constable. The Panel will also maintain a regular check and balance on the performance of the Commissioner, including the responsibility to review non-criminal complaints made against them.

The role of a Panel member will be an important and demanding one. The commitment required from a Panel member will depend upon the work programme approved by the Panel, but typically might average one day a month, including preparation time. Meetings will generally be held during normal office hours and will be held at varying locations throughout Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Panel members will be able to claim reasonable travelling expenses and an allowance, and will receive induction and other appropriate training.

The Panel wishes to reflect the breadth of communities in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and welcomes applications from all eligible people – irrespective of age, disability (includes physical, emotional or mental disabilities), gender reassignment and pregnancy/ maternity, race (includes ethnic or national  origin, colour or nationality), religion or belief, sex (male/female/transgender), sexual orientation (gay/lesbian/bisexual/heterosexual).

Applications from people with experience (in a paid or unpaid role) in community safety, victim support, criminal justice and related issues will be particularly welcomed.

The Co-opted Members Recruitment Pack includes further information about the role of the Panel, eligibility for co-option and an application form.

The closing date for applications is 10 April 2014.
