Hands on History
Go on a voyage of discovery across a wide range of topics, from personal, family and community histories, to social and political studies. Hampshire Archives and Local Studies is happy to help support activity marking the centenary of the First World War and 70th anniversary of D-Day, everything from historical writing to creative artwork, using the rich archive that reflects Hampshire’s long connection with the armed forces. A series of workshops will be run to assist with this, with the first on 20 November 2013.
Hampshire Archives and Local Studies website lists records held at Hampshire Record Office and other useful information to help with your projects including:
For communities wishing to do work on their war memorials, the War Memorials Trust, with English Heritage, has published guidance on maintenance and prevention of theft of war memorials. In preparation for 2014, new guidance is also available on caring for war memorial landscapes and gardens.
If your war memorial is at risk of theft or damage, the In Memoriam 2014 project, a partnership between the War Memorials Trust and the SmartWater Foundation, may be able to help. The project is using the centenary of the First World War as a focus for this initiative, which aims to help communities preserve their war memorial heritage.
