HOW TO… play safe
Millions of toys are bought every Christmas and provide hours of safe fun for children. But accidents do happen and to avoid your child being hurt by an unsafe toy, think about these simple steps from our Trading Standards team:
Buy your toys from reputable retailers. Avoid squat shops and street sellers. Toys bought from jumble sales, car boots or over the internet need extra care.
When the toy is first unpacked, give it a good pull and prod to check for detachable small parts, sharp edges and sharp points.
Check for the CE symbol – the manufacturer's declaration that the toy meets all toy safety laws and standards. Or the voluntary British Toy and Hobby Association 'Lion Mark' which is often seen on toy packaging. All Association members' toys will comply with the legal safety rules.
Check on toys periodically once in use. If they no longer look safe, dispose of them.
Clear up afterwards. More accidents are caused by tripping over toys left lying around than from unsafe toys themselves!
Have happy playtimes! But if you are concerned about the safety of any toy you buy, let Trading Standards know, by ringing 01962 869765.
