Give ‘em a boost

Did you know that children under 12 years old need to use a booster seat when travelling in a vehicle?

Road safety experts believe that many children stop using booster seats and cushions too early, and start using adult seat belts before they are tall enough. This means that the shoulder strap cuts across their neck instead of their shoulder, leading to serious or fatal injuries in an accident.

New laws which came into effect on 18 September this year say

  • children under three years old must travel in the correct child seat

  • children 3 – 12 years old must travel in the correct child or booster seat until they reach about 4' 5" (135cms)

  • taller children and all those aged 12 and over need to use adult belts

  • rear-facing baby seats must not be used in seats with an active frontal air-bag.
