Ask the expert: Registration Services

A civil wedding ceremony

Hampshire Registration Service is responsible for the registration of births, deaths, marriages, and civil partnerships occurring in the registration district of Hampshire County Council.

The service also licenses venues for marriage and civil partnership as well as offering a Nationality Checking Service, delivering citizenship ceremonies along with a range of additional celebratory services designed to commemorate milestone events in your life. Birth, death and marriage registers are also held dating back to July 1837 for events occurring in the county. Registration Officer, Jade Bower, offers some advice on registration in Hampshire.

I would like to get married in Hampshire. Where do I begin?

We perform civil marriages at nine of our Registration Offices, offering a choice of style and location. Our Registration Officers also conduct civil marriages at over 150 licensed venues throughout Hampshire. For a brochure to help you plan your Hampshire wedding, see the Hampshire Registration Services webpages.

All couples who are having a civil marriage in England or Wales must give ‘Notice of Marriage’ which is a legal requirement. You will need to book an appointment at the Registration Office of your choice in advance.

I want to apply to be a British Citizen. How do I make an appointment to discuss this?

You can book an appointment at six of our Registration Offices in Hampshire. An advisor will help you complete your application and ensure you have the relevant documents. They will then send it to the Home Office. This costs £55 per application or £160 per family.

How do I make an appointment to register the death of a relative?

You can register a death at any of our 14 Hampshire Registration Offices. To book an appointment call the Hampshire Registration Service and they will arrange a convenient time and place for you to attend. You will need to bring a Medical Cause of Death Certificate with you, issued by the doctor. If a coroner has been involved, you will be advised what to do when booking your appointment.
