Chartered Management Institute Accreditation



Promoting a culture of learning that provides individual recognition as well as organisational benefits promotes an ethos that reflects our values and supports the view that the Council is an employer of choice.

Accredited learning complements the Management and Leadership competency framework by providing the opportunity to evidence the practical application of the knowledge, skills and behaviours through formal assessment.  This in turn facilitates the achievement of the three Corporate Priorities and the Council aim of building capacity and capability to deliver services now and in the future.

Endorsing the Council’s management and leadership development programmes by external accreditation follows current trends in both the private and public sector enabling the Council to bench mark with other organisations.

The two leading bodies providing management and leadership accreditation are the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM).

Following extensive discussions with both national awarding bodies to assess partnership suitability, the CMI were identified as best suited to working with the Council for the following reasons:

  • Public sector experience: working with large public sector authorities: initiatives included the Police National Training School, National School of Government, HM Customs & Excise and Kent County Council;

  • Infrastructure: is well established and features one of the best on-line resources in Europe (this is supported by independent evaluation by the University of Southampton who have also linked up with the CMI);

  • Management as a profession: additional kudos of ‘Chartered’ Status for managers and builds on the notion that management is a profession in its own right;

  • Quality: experience gained of developing senior management and applying this to lower level management. This gives an indication of high quality standards;

On completion of the Hampshire Own Grown CMI accreditation, every participant has the opportunity to achieve an Introduction to Management Diploma.
