What is the Hampshire Own Grown Graduates Programme?
The Graduates programme is designed to develop individuals as defined in Summary role profile and person specification.
Each of the modules will use a variety of theory, case histories, current issues and models complemented by practical skills to assist in the development of new skills and experiences, for example as part of the modules a participant can expect to acquire:
- Explore management/work situations in which we as individuals/managers/leaders we feel comfortable and uncomfortable, how to understand other perspectives through Emotional Intelligence and work effectively with colleagues.
- An opportunity to raise profile and gain confidence so as to influence with authority. Understand own style of leadership to increase flexibility and identify opportunities to lead proactively.
- Appreciate the ways that politics can be applied with integrity and constructively.
- Understand the fundamentals of strategic thinking.
What Does It Lead To?
So what will the programme lead to and how will it assist in my development?
The programme is not a fast track initiative or a promise of promotion and it doesn’t entitle the participant to a salary increase.
What it will do is:
- Increase the participants understanding, knowledge and confidence within areas of Management and Leadership, demonstrate how to lead within teams
- Increase understanding of Emotional Intelligence and the benefits to using it in all aspects of life and within the work environment (negotiating, influencing colleagues, conflict management and effective communication).
- Develop within the participant an understanding local government, members, councillors, the organisations challenges and the role of an Officer
- Assist in developing skills around change management – what it is, how it can be used and when
- Ensure every participants receives recognition –they will have been identified via the nomination process as an individual with potential within their department. Hampshire Own Grown will give the opportunity to further raise their profile within the organisation by way of projects and assignments
- Work alongside development plan (IPP) to link with career aspirations
- Give an opportunity to expand network colleagues/contacts/partners by way of projects and assignments, working with colleagues from other areas of the organisation

Who Can Apply?
Participants should be able to demonstrate the following:
- Working within the organisation (E/F grade )
- Between one and five years local government experience
- Some management/leadership experience in a local authority or other context
- Has a consistent meets/exceeds expectations rating as part of PDR/IPP process and achieved all targets set to a high standard
