Hampshire backs calls to protect hospice funds frozen in Iceland

Leader of Hampshire County Council, Ken Thornber has added his weight to calls for the Government to safeguard the savings of Hampshire based charity Naomi House.

In a letter to Treasury Minister, Angela Eagle MP, Councillor Thornber has called on the Government to do more to secure the £5.7 million of the charity’s savings, that are currently frozen in Icelandic bank Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander.

Councillor Thornber has also added his name to a petition of more than 5,000 signatures, calling for the Prime Minister to do everything in his power to recover the funding.

The backing of the Hampshire County Council Leader follows a recent Commons debate on the Naomi House funding issue, which saw Government recognition for the work of the organisation, but no reassurance by ministers that support would be given to secure the charity’s future.

Naomi House provides vital ongoing care and support to hundreds of children with life limiting conditions and their families, across Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Dorset, the Isle of Wight and West Sussex.
