Helping school leavers with post-16 choices

More than 12,000 (94%) of Hampshire's school leavers have secured a place at college or are set to take up an apprenticeship from September.

Changes in education legislation mean that those completing their secondary education this summer have to continue in education or training for a further academic year. The aim is to give all young people the opportunity to develop their skills and qualifications, enabling them to get a job or go on to university.

Hampshire County Council has a range of support developed specifically for young people reaching this critical milestone in their life. It has also made a commitment to provide 1000 apprenticeship opportunities within the organisation over the next five years.

Apprenticeships will be advertised on the National Apprenticeship website but, in the meantime, young people can register their interest in an apprenticeship scheme, by adding their details to the Council's 'Youth Talent Bank'.

From September, it is looking to recruit apprentices to train in areas such as engineering, business administration, information and communications technology, environmental and catering.

School leavers who are still undecided about which option is best for them can find practical advice and information online at 'Youth Tube'. Here they can find out about opportunities for further education, work-based learning and apprenticeship opportunities. Among the practical advice available is how to produce a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and the possibilities for financial support.

According to the Department for Education, Hampshire's figures for the number of NEETs are better than national and regional averages at 4.8 per cent (1,990). Nationally, the 16-18 NEET average is closer to 6.5%.

Commenting, Councillor Peter Edgar, Executive Member for Education, said: "The number of young people not in education, employment or training is lower than many other parts of the country and we are committed to reducing this still further by keeping more in education or training. With our Hampshire Youth Investment programme apprenticeship scheme, investment in Future Skills Centres, advice and support through YouthTube and the Hampshire Careers and Employability Service, we are working hard to develop opportunities for young people to improve their prospects as they move towards entering a very competitive job market. Giving young people the chance to acquire skills that will enable them to meet the needs of local employers is also crucial in terms of supporting Hampshire's economy."
