Friday, 07 February 2014

Hampshire County Council's Runways End Outdoor Centre in Aldershot has been shortlisted for a prestigious Civic Trust Award which recognises the very best in architecture, design, planning and landscape.

Awards are given to projects that demonstrate high quality architecture or design, have demonstrated sustainability, are accessible to all users and have made a positive cultural, social or economic contribution to the local community. The winners will be announced on Friday 7 March.

Runways End Outdoor Centre was designed and implemented by the County Council's in-house designers in Property Services. The centre is a £4.8 million facility which was completed in September 2012.

It is set in 3.7 hectares of woodland and the site has been transformed into one of the biggest outdoor centres in the country. The new activity and education facilities include a new multi use hall with an indoor climbing wall; a camping facilities building; a residential building and dining hall; together with a canoe store and a refurbished administration building. The Centre has high and low rope activities, caving experience and an abseiling and climbing wall.

Councillor Roy Perry, Leader of Hampshire County Council, said: "It is a great honour that we have been shortlisted for a national Civic Trust Award which reflects the exemplary work of our Property Services team. Runway's End Outdoor Centre is a wonderful facility that offers a great experience to visitors."
