Runway's End Outdoor Centre wins Civic Trust Commendation
Thursday, 20 March 2014
Hampshire County Council's Runways End Outdoor Centre in Aldershot has been given a commendation at the prestigious Civic Trust Awards which recognises the very best in architecture, design, planning and landscape.
Commendations are given to projects that make a significant contribution to the quality and appearance of the built environment. This scheme demonstrates a sustainable approach to design and architecture, and provides a positive social, cultural, environmental or economic benefit to the local community.
Runways End Outdoor Centre was designed and implemented by the County Council's in-house designers in Property Services. The centre is a £4.8 million facility and is the result of innovative partnership working between Hampshire County Council, Rushmoor Borough Council and Black Water Valley District Scouts. Funding to build the centre was secured from the central government Co-Location Fund and it was completed in September 2012.
It is set in 3.7 hectares of woodland and the site has been transformed into one of the biggest outdoor centres in the country. The new activity and education amenities include a new multi use hall with an indoor climbing wall; a camping facilities building; a residential building and dining hall; together with a canoe store and a refurbished administration building. The Centre has high and low rope activities, caving experience and an abseiling and climbing wall.
Councillor Roy Perry, Leader of Hampshire County Council, said: "It is a great honour that we have been given a commendation by the national Civic Trust Awards which reflects the exemplary work of our Property Services team. Runway's End Outdoor Centre is a wonderful facility that offers a great experience to visitors."
