Communities join dialogue on oil and gas development in Hampshire

Thursday, 05 June 2014

Hampshire County Council, together with its partner mineral planning authorities (Southampton City Council, Portsmouth City Council and the New Forest National Park Authority), is today (5 June 2014) holding an event to discuss oil and gas development in Hampshire.

Around 200 delegates are expected to attend the event at Winchester Guildhall. The purpose of the event is to clarify the roles of the planning and regulation authorities, and discuss what may be expected should planning applications come forward for oil and gas development in the future. The event also plans to address issues of concern associated with oil and gas development, and in particular the fracking process, raised by Hampshire's local communities and interest groups.

Councillor Seán Woodward, Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council, said; "As potential for the extraction of unconventional shale oil or gas becomes increasingly high profile, this event is an excellent opportunity to learn the facts, hear all points of views and discuss the issues associated with both conventional and unconventional oil and gas development in Hampshire.

"Our role as the local authority is to protect Hampshire's environment and communities while supporting the economy through sustainable management of minerals and waste development, and this is what the Hampshire Minerals and Waste Plan is there to do. Any planning applications in the future for oil and as development, like any other forms of mineral extraction, will be subject to the solid and agreed guidance in this plan."

A number of speakers representing local experts, Government departments, the Minerals Planning Authority, regulators, the oil and gas industry, environmental organisations and local interest groups will be taking part, and a wide mix of organisations and local interest groups are expected to attend.
