Try something new at the Festivals of Disability Sport

Three sports festivals running in Hampshire this summer are aimed at helping injured servicemen and women and disabled people get more active and into sports clubs.
The sport festivals being run by Sport Hampshire IOW and Hampshire County Council will offer disabled people the chance to try out different Paralympic and Disability sports for free and discover the clubs and activities running in their local area.
The first event kicks off on Armed Forces Day 28 June at Aldershot Military Stadium.
In Hampshire and the Isle of Wight around double the number of non-disabled people (40.7%) take part in sport once a week compared to disabled people (20.7%)
For anyone with physical, sensory, learning and mental health issues, participating in sport can be difficult. However, over the last 10-15 years sport and physical activity in the community has become much more accessible with clubs adapting their sport, obtaining appropriate equipment and training their staff to work with people who have variety of learning and physical needs.
There are a wide range of sporting opportunities available in Hampshire with clubs offering Athletics, Football (many adapted variations), Martial Arts, Cricket, Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby.

Councillor Keith Mans, Hampshire County Council's Armed Forces Champion, said: "The festivals are being funded via the Community Covenant grant scheme, which was set up to fund local projects which strengthen the ties or the mutual understanding between members of the Armed Forces Community and the wider community in which they live.
"We all know that Sport is good for your physical wellbeing. But equally important is the fact that it can help with your emotional wellbeing. Taking part in sport can make you feel part of a team, part of community, where you are all training and playing together, supporting each other."
