Looking to London 2012 at Winchester Discovery Centre
Thursday, 24 May 2012
Faster, Higher - an Olympic themed, multi-screen work, by the artist susan pui san lok, will open in The Gallery at Winchester Discovery Centre this month.
As Britain counts down to the London 2012 Games this Summer, this unique work both celebrates and explores wider perspectives on holding this monumental event and the impact it can have on a nation.
Featuring rarely-seen archive Olympic material, Chinese documentary newsreels and footage from the London site, the piece focuses on the effort and commitment of individual athletes, as well as the wider political ramifications of the Olympic spectacle.
Faster, Higher was commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella and BFI to coincide with the 2008 Beijing Olympics, however, it proves equally powerful in the lead-up to London 2012.
The Faster, Higher exhibition will be showing at The Gallery in Winchester Discovery Centre from Saturday 26 May until Sunday 15 July 2012.
Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Culture and Recreation, Councillor Keith Chapman, said:
"With London 2012 approaching, Faster, Higher provides an interesting outlook on what effect the Olympics can have on a country. This culturally significant film is both thought-provoking and mesmerising with its unique themes.
"The Gallery continues to bring significant and exclusive exhibitions to Hampshire residents and this is another that is not to be missed."
Also at Winchester Discovery Centre this summer are a number of Olympic-themed events. Including Sporting Heroes - an exhibition celebrating local sporting personalities, and Rings - a textile ring installation that will be on display in the library.
