Improving routes for pedestrians and buses in Chandler's Ford

Hampshire County Council's scheme to make it easier for pedestrians to walk to the rail station and bus services on Bournemouth Road and Chalvington Road in Chandler's Ford, is set to start on 15 October 2012, for six weeks.

Work will comprise:

• Improvements to the existing crossing refuge island on the Bournemouth Road south arm;
• A new crossing refuge on the School Lane arm of the junction;
• Widening a section of footway on Bournemouth Road, from the Hendy Ford development to the junction with Chalvington Road;
• Updating the traffic signal technology (with Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation) so that the timing of the light changes adjusts, automatically, to fluctuations in traffic volumes to keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible and minimise congestion;
• Additionally, installing Selective Vehicle Detection (SVD) technology which detects approaching buses and triggers an interruption in the traffic light cycle, giving them priority to keep moving and so reduce bus journey delays.

Councillor Mel Kendal, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Environment and Transport, said:

"We have designed this scheme so that people are able to walk, more easily and safely, to the station, local schools, shops and businesses, as well as to improve reliability and journey times for bus passengers who catch the bus in Chandler';s Ford.

"In order to keep disruption for pedestrians and road users to a minimum, we have arranged the work programme to ensure that working hours are between 9.30am to 4.30pm only. During this time traffic will be managed using temporary traffic lights."

The cost of the scheme is £210,000, to be funded by the Department for Transport' Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) and local developer contributions.
