Pavement improvements in Great Minster Street, Winchester

Work is set to start in April on a scheme to improve the pavements, kerb lines and road surface in Great Minster Street, Winchester as part of continuing support for local businesses and tourism by Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council.

The scheme has been designed to improve pedestrian access to local shops and the cathedral and to discourage vehicles, that do not need access to local businesses or properties, from using the narrow streets.The new layout will also serve to encourage traffic that is permitted to enter Great Minster Street and The Square to travel at an appropriate speed.

Councillor Ken Thornber, Leader of Hampshire County Council, commented: "When completed, this scheme will result in a more attractive and tidier appearance and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike. Great Minster Street's overall environment will be enhanced, complementing previous work in The Square and the High Street beyond, made possible by the collaborative working of the two authorities. While inevitably there will be some disruption during the works, we will work with the contractors to do whatever we can to keep this to a minimum. I trust that local residents, retailers and other businesses will agree that the scheme will give a real lift to the area, that will also be appreciated by visitors to this historic city."

Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader of Winchester City Council whose portfolio includes economic development and tourism, said: "This scheme is an excellent example of our councils working together to provide real improvements that will benefit local businesses and visitors to our historic city."

The Great Minster Street scheme follows the high quality road and pavement surface and drainage improvements in The Square, providing a further boost to the local retail and tourist industry by making the city centre an attractive place to visit, shop and eat out.

Hampshire County Council developed the £350,000 scheme, in partnership with Winchester City Council (which has contributed £60,000) and in consultation with local residents, businesses and Winchester BID.

Mildren Construction will be carrying out the work on behalf of the County Council. Mildren is the contractor that also completed the re-paving of Winchester High Street, work in The Square and the first phase of the Great Minster Street works last year. The start date is 22 April and it is expected that work will be completed during the early part of the Summer.

Agreement for the work to go ahead was given by Councillor Thornber in his capacity as Executive Member for Policy and Resources, at a Decision Day meeting on 14 March.
