Hamble College achieves Investor in Careers Award

Hamble Community Sports College has achieved national recognition after receiving a quality award for its careers education. On 20 June, Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Education, Councillor Peter Edgar, presented the College Career Champions and Principal, Gerry Halley-Gordon, with the 'Investors in Careers' Award.
With support from Hampshire Careers and Employability Service, delivered by the County Council, Hamble Community Sports College provides careers education for its 1000 students and their parents/carers. The Department for Education encourages all schools to gain a recognised quality award and, in its most recent report (December 2012), Ofsted highlighted the College's careers provision, stating: "Students are given good advice and guidance about the subjects they choose to study and, as a result, the numbers of students who are not in education, employment or training when they leave are very low."
Councillor Edgar commented: "This is the first award of its kind to be presented to a secondary school in Hampshire, since the introduction of the Quality in Careers Standard. Hamble Community Sports College is to be congratulated on its achievement. When you are young it is often difficult to know what options are open to you and how to make the most of your strengths. This is where excellent careers education and guidance comes into its own, helping young people to identify what they want to do when they leave school and what path to take to get them there. I am pleased to learn that other schools in the county are following in the College's footsteps and are also working with us towards gaining this accreditation."
Mrs Halley-Gordon commented: "We work hard to ensure that those heading towards further and higher education or employment are equipped with the skills and knowledge that they need to make the most of the potential and the opportunities open to them. We are grateful to the County Council's Careers and Employability service for their support, and much of the credit for this award must go to Vicky Hall, our Careers Education Information and Advice co-ordinator and her student Careers Champions. This award is a significant achievement for the College and we will do all we can to maintain the high standard for which we have been recognised."
