New classrooms agreed for Rownhams St John's School
Monday, 24 June 2013
The temporary classroom at Rownham's St John's Church of England School in Rownhams, is to be replaced with two new classrooms in permanent accommodation for the Summer term next year (2014).
At Hampshire County Council's Children's Services Decision Day, Councillor Peter Edgar, Executive Member for Education agreed the £496,000 investment in the school's extension.
Commenting on the decision, Councillor Edgar said: "From the information I have considered, and a visit I have made personally to the school, I am satisfied that the existing temporary classroom situation at the school is unsatisfactory and not sustainable. Accommodating the pupils in permanent classrooms will provide a brighter and much more comfortable environment for them to be taught in, helping them to get the most out of their education.
The new classrooms are designed to complement the existing building. Care has been taken to ensure the two classrooms will not encroach on any of the recently developed areas of the school grounds and that there will be no loss of any playground space. Good levels of day light will be provided in all teaching areas and improvements made to provide better ventilation. Provision has also been made to include alterations that will create a learning area where small groups can work or one to one teaching support can be given.
Work to construct the new classrooms will start in the Summer and be completed during Spring 2014. The temporary classrooms will remain in use until the new classrooms are available for occupation and the school will operate as normal during construction period. All health and safety measures needed will be put in place to ensure the safety of the school community and site staff while work is in progress to build the new classrooms.
