Hampshire's Olympic golden girl helps Calshot Activities Centre celebrate its golden anniversary
Hampshire-based Olympic gold medallist Dani King MBE will add the Midas touch to 50th birthday celebrations at Hampshire County Council's Calshot Activities Centre on Tuesday 9 July 2013.
Dani, who is from Hamble-le-Rice in the Borough of Eastleigh won the cycling team pursuit gold at the London 2012 Olympics. To mark Calshot Activity Centre's Golden anniversary, she will be raising a special flag at the New Forest based venue along with some of the Hampshire Games Makers, who were the volunteers at the London 2012 Olympics.
On the same day (9 July), Hampshire County Council will also launch its Olympic Legacy Programme that aims to inspire everyone to "Do More, Be More"!
Local school children will then join Dani for a spin around the velodrome at the Activity Centre, which is where she cycled as a teenager before going on to achieve Olympic and World Championship cycling success.
Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, Councillor Keith Chapman, said: "As a home-grown Hampshire Olympic gold medallist, it is a huge honour to have Dani's help in marking this fantastic milestone in Calshot's history.
"Calshot has played a significant part in helping up-and-coming riders to gain access to time on the track, being the only indoor track in the South and it's great to be able to support so many of these promising athletes through our Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme. The 2012 Olympics may be behind us, but they have left an amazing legacy not only in Hampshire, but throughout the country as a whole and we look forward to supporting new generations to come, reach great sporting heights in future."
Dani King said: "It's really nice to be back at Calshot to help celebrate their 50th birthday. Hampshire County Council supported me through their Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme, and it's great to hear that they are still supporting sport, from community level through to young professional athletes."
Calshot Activities Centre is one of the largest outdoor adventure centres in Britain and its velodrome has not only welcomed Dani King, but also the likes of gold medal winners Joanna Rowsell and Geraint Thomas. Olympic Triathlon winners Alistair and Jonny Brownlee also visited the Centre on their path to London 2012 glory.
Dani King benefited from Hampshire County Council's Hampshire Talented Athlete Scheme (HTAS) early in her career. The scheme helps rising sports stars reach their sporting potential and achieve success on the world class stage, through a range of benefits including help with training, equipment, physiotherapy, grants up to £400 and travel.
Dani also continues to be an ambassador for Hampshire County Council to help inspire more people to do sport or physical activity.
