Lees Lane North improvements

Monday, 08 July 2013

Works to improve traffic flow through The Crossways and Lees Lane North junction in Gosport have started this week.

The scheme will provide new traffic light equipment at the junction which will be more responsive to traffic demand and improve operational efficiency. The scheme will also provide a new bus lane on Lees Lane North, reducing journey times for the Eclipse E1 bus services.

A new bus stop - with the latest 24-hour travel information and security equipment- will be built on Lees Lane North and the existing bus stop on The Crossways and Forton Road will be upgraded to a similar standard.

The scheme, which is scheduled to finish at the beginning of October, will cost £560,000 and is funded from a grant awarded to Hampshire County Council through the Department for Transport Better Bus Area Fund, a fund which is targeted at bus-related measures that help support economic growth and reduce carbon emissions.

While the work is in progress temporary traffic management will be required at the junction. 4-way temporary traffic signals will be in place during periods of construction which will be operated manually during peak times. Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journey while the work is underway.

Cllr Seán Woodward, Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council said:

"This is a very welcome boost for bus passengers and motorists using these busy routes and will improve public transport accessibility in and out of Gosport. The works will improve safety for all road users, provide a dedicated bus lane and make better use of existing road space for all users. It complements the Eclipse Bus Rapid Transit system by expanding into a wider rapid transit network. The new bus stops will dramatically increase the information available to passengers, with 24 hour CCTV and information screens providing bus, train and ferry times."
