Work experience reaps rewards for Basingstoke student
Monday, 29 July 2013
Work experience for a student from Aldworth Science College has reaped rewards. Daryl George, aged 16, was recently presented with a certificate and £25 voucher, from Hampshire County Council's Careers and Employability Service, for attending his placement every week, on time and for being an enthusiastic learner and trainee worker.
Daryl spent one day a week for three months working at The Vyne House's Brewhouse Café, getting a taste of the world of work at first hand. He was one of 35 young people in Years 10 and 11 (age 15 and 16) from schools in the Basingstoke area, to complete work experience with local businesses between July 2012 and July 2013. As a result, Daryl has now been taken on by The Brewhouse Café as a part-time employee.
Councillor Peter Edgar, Executive Member for Education at Hampshire County Council, commented: "Work experience placements are invaluable in giving young people, who are coming to the end of their school years, their first taste of life in the world of work. Daryl is to be commended for his commitment to his placement and we are grateful to The Brewhouse Café for giving him this opportunity. We are also extremely appreciative of all the support of that local businesses in the area give our Hampshire Careers and Employability Service by providing placement opportunities for young people."
Kellie Jones, Manager of The Brewhouse Café, commented: "We are pleased to provide a chance for young people to experience what it is like to do a job and go to work on a daily basis. Daryl's willingness to learn and his enthusiasm has been great and we are really proud to have him welcomed him in the team as a paid, part-time employee."
