Get Going in Hampshire this summer with Change4Life
Tuesday, 30 July 2013
Summer is a great time for us all to get active and Change4Life's 'Get Going this summer' campaign is aimed at helping those with kids, to keep them busy over the school holidays.
Hampshire County Council and local partners across Hampshire have lots of events and opportunities taking place over the summer for children and adults to be both active and entertained.
Watch out for special stands at events and venues which include the New Forest Show (30 July-1 Aug), Paultons Park (29 August); the Winchester Criterium (11 August), the Book Bus at Havant ASDA (10am-3pm; Thursdays between 1-22 August) and at Staunton Country Park (10am-3pm, Wednesdays between 31 July - 21 August); as well as Summer Reading Challenge events at Havant, Gosport and Rushmoor libraries.
Adults should make sure they're active for 150 minutes a week to be healthy but for strengthening muscles and bones, healthy hearts and to reduce risk of serious illness, kids need more exercise. Under 5 year olds need three hours daily, which can be broken down into smaller chunks of energetic activity throughout the day, For over 5s, one hour daily of physical activity that gets their heart beating faster than usual, is essential to burn off calories and prevent them storing up excess fat in the body.
"It can be all too easy to let the kids spend a bit too much time on the sofa over the summer, and whilst it's great to relax after a long school year, it's also important to make sure that they stay active during the holidays," explained Councillor Liz Fairhurst, Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing (Public Health), at Hampshire County Council. "I would encourage families to sign up for their free, personalised 'Get Going this summer' online activity plan which will help them to stay fit and feel great. They can do this either by picking up a pack - look out for these at local events and participating libraries in Hampshire, or by going to the Change4Life webpages"
As well the activity plans online there is a fun generator with simple ideas for kid's games, other interactive tools and healthy summer food, including easy picnic recipes to try whilst out and about during the holidays.
So make the most of what's going on in Hampshire and make sure this summer is a happy and healthy one!
