County Council's country parks proudly fly the Green Flag of Excellence
Friday, 2 August 2013
This Love Parks Week sees for the first time all of Hampshire County Council's eligible country parks flying the prestigious Green Flag Award for 2013 at the same time.
The national award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.
The Green Flag is a sign to visitors that the County Council's country parks boast the highest possible standards, are beautifully maintained and have excellent facilities.
The country parks that have hoisted their coveted Green Flags during Love Parks Week (Monday 29 July - Sunday 4 August) are:
- Lepe Country Park, New Forest
- Manor Farm Country Park, near Bursledon
- Queen Elizabeth Country Park, near Petersfield
- Royal Victoria Country Park, at Netley
- Staunton Country Park, Havant
Councillor Keith Chapman, Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, said: "These Green Flags are great news, particularly for all the staff, volunteers and partner organisations who put so much hard work and dedication into making our parks a perfect location for families to enjoy."
As visitors to the County Council's Countryside sites have been enjoying the recent warm weather, very high temperatures have increased the risk of wildfires, and during Love Parks Week, the County Council is supporting a campaign by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and the New Forest National Park to raise awareness of the potential dangers of Chinese lanterns.
Councillor Chapman added; "This summer we have been blessed with warm, dry sunny weather, but this can also have its drawbacks. I would echo the advice from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and ask visitors to our countryside sites to be extra vigilant and follow a few simple steps, such as extinguishing cigarettes properly and not throwing them on the ground or out of car windows. If people see a fire they should call 999 and leave the area as quickly as possible."
