Go ahead given for new roundabout in Basingstoke
Wednesday, 11 September 2013
Councillor Seán Woodward has given the go ahead to build a much needed roundabout at the junction of Sherfield Road and Campbell Road in Bramley, Basingstoke.
The decision was made at Councillor Woodward's Economy, Transport and Environment decision day, on Tuesday 10 September.
The new roundabout will reduce congestion at the existing junction which has increased as a result of traffic from the new housing development built on former MoD land on German Road.
The junction improvement was considered to be a priority by Bramley Parish Council and was endorsed by local residents at a public consultation exhibition held in the village hall.
It was also agreed to extend the existing 40mph speed limit approximately 80m further east (towards Sherfield on Loddon) from its current position on Sherfield Road, to reduce vehicle speed along the road and on the approach to the new roundabout.
Councillor Seán Woodward, said: "This new roundabout will be a welcome benefit and will improve access for local residents in and out of Campbell Road. Safety will also be improved at this junction by reducing the speed of traffic on Sherfield Road on the approach to the new roundabout. Access to the adjacent bus stop/shelter will also be improved especially for the elderly, mobility impaired and children in push chairs, by the addition of dropped kerbed crossings with tactile paving."
The scheme, which is mainly being financed from developer contributions, will cost £510,000 and subject to a legal agreement with a local landowner and weather conditions, could be started as soon as January 2014. It will take approximately 20 weeks to complete.
