A27 Western Way Bus lane and Bus Gate
Wednesday, 06 November 2013
Please see meeting summaries on the Western Way Bus Lane and Bus Gate which were approved yesterday by the Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, Cllr Seán Woodward.
On making his decision Cllr Woodward said: "The A27 provides a strategic route across south Hampshire and is a critical east to west transport artery. It is a heavily used route that experiences significant peak hour congestion and improvements are considered essential, not only to improve existing traffic flow but also to enable regeneration and economic growth. To enhance and build upon the success of the recently completed Eclipse BRT, I have approved new measures to further ease congestion, increase safety and improve journey times at peak hours around Fareham and Gosport.
"The trial bus lanes along Western Way have helped improve journey time reliability on the Eclipse services, which contributes to public satisfaction with the service. However while being successful in relation to the benefits for Eclipse services, the experimental bus lanes have resulted in objections by road users in relation to increased congestion for general traffic particularly at Station Roundabout.
"Yesterday's decision will mean the A27 Western Way approach to Station Roundabout can be reopened up to two lanes of traffic, while still keeping a dedicated bus lane to accommodate the Eclipse BRT buses. A new bus gate will be also built at the new intersection of the A27 Western Way so that buses can bypass the roundabout when travelling from Western Road.
"These improvements are part of a wider strategy which I believe will greatly improve congestion in Fareham and Gosport making it a more desirable location to live, work and visit."
