Help to quit in the workplace

Monday, 30 December 2013

Hampshire County Council is encouraging smokers to kick the habit as part of a new national campaign being launched for the New Year. This follows on from the hugely successful Stoptober campaign - the 28 day national stop smoking challenge - where nearly 6,000 Hampshire residents signed up to quit, giving Hampshire the third highest number of sign-ups in England.

Hampshire County Council staff were also helped to kick the habit through on-site support provided by Quit4Life, the Hampshire NHS Stop Smoking Service.

Councillor Liz Fairhurst, Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health, said: "I would like to congratulate everyone who managed to quit in Stoptober. Quitting smoking is such a major achievement and the best way you can look after current and future health. Our Quit4Life programme helps smokers understand the realities of giving up and supports them to overcome those challenges."

"If you missed Stoptober, then why not consider stopping for the New Year? Hampshire County Council will again be encouraging staff to quit and will be promoting Quit4Life NHS Stop Smoking Services throughout January."

Giving up smoking has numerous financial, physical and health benefits. Every time you smoke, blood that's thick and dirty with toxins circulates through your body in seconds, which increase your chances of a heart attack or stroke. If you could see the damage, you'd stop. Find out more about the benefits of giving up.

For any employer, offering help to quit in the workplace is a great way of supporting employees. Quit4Life can provide on-site support to groups of employees who want to quit and help improve the productivity of your organisation. These groups have excellent success rates with encouragement and support from colleagues.
