New Year New You!
Monday, 06 January 2014
Millions of us will make resolutions over the New Year whether it is to lose weight, get fitter, stop smoking or save money. But these resolutions can quickly be forgotten when people return to their normal routines in January.
Help is on hand this year to motivate and help inspire with www.Myjourneyhampshire.com.
The web site features an online journey planner that can be used to source walking or cycling routes and even count the calories, helping people incorporate small changes into their lifestyle and daily routine. Many Hampshire residents have already managed to make changes to the way they travel, saving money and getting fitter and several have agreed to share their stories to help motivate us all.
One Hampshire resident found small changes can really add up. When Emma Finkell from Farnborough gave up her car because of the increasing cost of fuel, the only thing she expected to trim was her budget. Now after cycling to work for 6 months she not only feels fitter but has trimmed two dress sizes!
Emma said: "I joined a workplace challenge and borrowed a bike but soon started to see the benefit and decided to buy a bike of my own. It has made a big difference in lots of ways."

Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, Councillor Seán Woodward, said: "We probably all need a little encouragement after the festive period to become more active and its great that people are willing to share their experiences to motivate us all. Of course more active travel choices, even just for short local trips, can bring even wider benefits such as getting fitter as well as reducing congestion."
The My Journey campaign which is funded by Department of Transport aims to give Hampshire's residents some alternative options to travelling by car for some of their journeys.
The objectives of the Government's fund are to reduce congestion at peak times, and to reduce carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. These objectives will be met at a local level, through 'My Journey' initiatives to encourage a more active lifestyle by encouraging walking, cycling, use of public transport or car sharing to travel around, particularly for local journeys.
