It's Big Energy Saving Week

As part of Big Energy Saving Week (27-31 January), Hampshire County Council is encouraging people to sign up to Switch Hampshire and see if they can save money on their energy bills.

People can register free with the Switch Hampshire scheme online or call 01962 846828 before 17 February.

So far 1500 people have registered to see if Switch Hampshire can save them money. The average figure for residents able to save with the last scheme was £120. *

Switch Hampshire is run in partnership with other local authorities in Hampshire and can really take the hassle out of switching for the thousands of people who find the energy market confusing.

The scheme is open to everyone who uses gas and/or electricity, including those on pre-payment meters. To register you will need to know the name of your current tariff for gas and/or electricity and how much energy you have used over the past year either in £s or kWhs. This should be on your annual statement, but you can also contact your energy supplier to find out. The scheme will contact you to tell you whether you could save and if so, by how much. There is no obligation to switch supplier but if you do decide to take up the offer, the switching process will be managed for you.

Residents who participated in the last scheme said:

"It was a simple process and does the job of searching for you."

"90% of the hassle of switching is done for me by the scheme."

"Since the new supplier was chosen, my existing supplier got wind of me moving away and has come back with an even better offer."

"It did exactly what it said on the tin. Great!"

Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Income and Capital Resources, Councillor Mel Kendal, said: "Campaigns like Big Energy Saving Week are a great way of reminding people to check their gas and electricity bills to see if they are paying over the odds. I would encourage anyone who has not switched in the past, or who is just baffled by the whole energy market, to join up and let Switch Hampshire take the hassle out of trying to find a cheaper tariff and switching for them. I think some people will be very surprised how much money can be saved. If no savings can be found, or Switch Hampshire is not considered to be able to offer the best deal, then there is no pressure or commitment to switch."

To give small and medium businesses in Hampshire a continued opportunity to switch and save, the Switch Hampshire scheme for businesses has been extended. Businesses can now register up until 17 February to see if they can also save money on their energy bills.
