Hampshire County Council awarded £144,000 for District Energy schemes

Hampshire County Council has secured Government funding to test the feasibility and viability of a potential energy scheme that could generate electricity, reduce energy bills, cut carbon emissions and increase energy security.
Hampshire County Council is one of 26 successful local authorities awarded Government funding announced today to support the development of heat network projects to provide more efficient heat to buildings and potentially lower heating bills.
This is the first wave of funding to be announced under the Government's drive to promote the development of heat networks, also known as district heating.
Hampshire County Council will receive £144,000 grant funding towards the development of the business case for a district energy network in Winchester. This funding will support feasibility work and the viability of schemes that would serve some of the larger energy consumers in the city including the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester University, HM Prison Winchester and Hampshire County Council.
Councillor Mel Kendal, Executive Member for Income and Capital Receipts at Hampshire County Council, said: "This is excellent news for Hampshire. This funding, and additional commercial and technical help that comes with it, will help us test the viability of a potential scheme to supply heat more efficiently and effectively. This has the potential to reduce our energy bills by £4million over the 25 years of the project as well as reducing carbon emissions and improving resilience of our energy supply."
Each of the successful authorities in England and Wales has been awarded a share of the £1.9 million, each receiving between £15,000 and £250,000.
A District Energy Network (DEN) is an efficient and reliable system that provides heating, hot water and electricity. It distributes heat in the form of hot water via insulated, underground pipes to local buildings. If used in conjunction with a Combined Heat and Power engine (which captures what would be otherwise wasted heat from a power plant) it can also generate electricity for distribution.
