Taking afternoon tea this Nutrition and Hydration week
Tuesday, 18 March 2014
Afternoon tea is being served around the world on Wednesday 19 March as part of Nutrition and Hydration Week 2014, highlighting the importance of good nutritional care and how it can improve people's quality of life.
Hampshire County Council is supporting the global event and more than 360 afternoon teas will be delivered by Apetito to older residents as they take advantage of the Council's Meals on Wheels service, helping them to access good quality, nutritionally-balanced food throughout the day.
The Afternoon Tea service was introduced in November 2013 to complement the daily hot lunches served everywhere across the county. It includes a savoury pastry, a sandwich, a piece of cake plus a serving of fruit and a juice drink, costing £3.50 per day, and delivered straight to the person's door.
Cllr Liz Fairhurst, Executive Member for Adult Social Care, said "Good nutrition and hydration plays a crucial role in helping people stay healthy and independent. A decreasing appetite or reduced ability to buy and prepare healthy foods can mean that older people don't get enough essential vitamins, mineral and fibre, and this can contribute to feeling generally unwell or exacerbate some chronic illness. Meals on Wheels serves over 4,500 hot lunches across Hampshire each week, and the new tea service is also proving increasingly popular with older residents.
"It is important that older people in particular stay well hydrated. Dehydration leads to a lowering of blood pressure, dizziness and can often bring on a fall. Having a fall can have a serious impact on anyone's life - but for older people the consequences can be devastating, including a loss of independence, mobility and confidence."
