Work to improve Stanmore Lane junction, Winchester
Wednesday, 26 March 2014
UPDATE: Further to the press release below, a short section of Stanmore Lane will nowbe closed in both directions between the junction of Oliver's Battery Road Northand Romsey Road, until Friday 18 April. The main crossroad junction of Romsey Road with Stanmore Lane will be operating under temporary traffic lights so delays are possible.
A £150,000 project by Hampshire County Council to improve the junction of Stanmore Lane and Romsey Road in Winchester will start on 7 April.
The project will see the layout altered to add a second traffic lane approaching the junction, as well as the removal of the underused pedestrian crossing and the installation of a replacement uncontrolled crossing, further to the south. The new crossing point is much more appropriate for how pedestrians currently cross the road, and will be manned by a School Crossing Patrol at school times.
Construction work is anticipated to take a total of nine weeks. Preparatory work will start on 1 April. Stanmore Lane will be closed in one direction (northbound approach to Romsey Road) from 7 to 18 April, while the road is widened. The road will then remain open using temporary traffic lights while the works are completed. A fully signed diversion route will be in place for the entire construction period to help traffic avoid the area.
Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, Councillor Sèan Woodward, said: "The improvements to Stanmore Lane junction will help relieve traffic congestion on a key access route into Winchester city centre, as well as provide a new pedestrian crossing point which is further away from the junction. There will inevitably be some disruption during the construction period, especially over the Easter school break, but we urge people to bear with us during this time as I am confident local residents will see improvements afterwards."
