Musical tribute celebrates 70th anniversary of D-Day

Friday 23 May 2014

In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Hampshire County Council's Music Service and Bay House School, Gosport, will present a concert of 1940s music, to honour and remember troops who embarked from Hampshire's coasts.

The concert takes place on Saturday 7 June at Bay House School and will feature local performers including Western Wards Community Choir and Hampshire Music Service's Portchester, Fareham and Gosport Training Band. Pupils from the school will also take to the stage to share readings.

Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Education, Councillor Peter Edgar, said: "Hampshire has a rich military history, and there was a staggering amount of activity across our coasts during the Second World War. Gosport played a significant role in D-Day, and I recall as a young boy witnessing the days leading up to and following 6 June 1944 and the immense impact they had on Gosport's people. I am thrilled that we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of this momentous day with a concert at one of Gosport's schools, it plays tribute not only to troops that left our shores during the Second World War but also to those who continue to serve overseas today.

"Bay House School is a fitting location for this event, having spent the war as a base for the Royal Engineers, and I'm delighted that so many current pupils are taking part in the concert. This is a wonderful example of how the County Council can work alongside its family of schools to develop projects that benefit both the school and the local community."

The concert will include some special touches, including a guard of honour by local cadets to welcome guests on arrival. Wartime artefacts will be on display, including a 1954 Liaison Vehicle, and during the concert interval a "25 pounder" - the foremost field gun used by the British Army in World War Two - will fire three times over Stokes Bay.

Tickets for the concert cost £5 and are available from Bay House School and Gosport Tourist information Centre.
